The site has a number of existing natural constraints not least protected trees, pronounced level changes, buried services and a limited footprint within a Conservation Area. The brief was simple to optimise residual space to provide a five bed residential unit. The completed building satisfies these challenges by arranging the extension in a courtyard formation partially submerged in the ground. The enclosing wall gently curves to follow an access wall and is simply expressed in Flemish brickwork. The new unit is connected to the existing house by a glazed link. To bring light and drama in to an otherwise confined space a pond is proposed and the boundary wall opened up to afford views in and out.
