Early Years Classrooms,
Lavenham Primary School, Suffolk
Role: Planning, Design & Project Management
Scope: New Build and Alteration
Client: Suffolk County Council
Lavenham CP School is an attractive, brick built Victorian school located close to the centre of the historic market town. A number of factors informed the project: a new intake of pupils, inadequate toilet provision and internal circulation problems. The proposal combines an early year’s classroom with the existing nursery use in a purpose built unit that replaces a tired and dated HORSA building and also provides dining facilities. Given the heating plant serving the entire school was located within the building to be demolished and was relatively new the proposal effectively encapsulates the existing plant room. A new toilet and connecting corridor were formed within the existing school and the whole joined by a new entrance lobby and canopy. Whilst relatively low in scale and surrounded by a high wall the scheme proved contentious given its location within a Conservation Area despite the LPA’s support of a contemporary approach.
