Ashe Green Lodge
Role: Planning, Appeal, Building Regulations
Scope:Historic Building, Extension
Client: Mr & Mrs Berger
Ashe Green Lodge is one of a pair of Victorian gate houses to an obsolete estate close to Woodbridge in Suffolk and is now used as a private residence. Given a limited footprint, extension proposals were developed that were sympathetic to the massing, scale and character of the original historic building. A split level design was adopted that created attic space over a new rear extension with a reduced floor level. Despite the unanimous backing of the Parish Council the planning application was overturned by the LPA on the grounds that it contravened Policy and was unsympathetic to the character of the area. OWL Architect’s scheme was subsequently granted unconditional consent at appeal and judged to be a design of appropriate high quality and ‘sympathetic to a Special Landscape Area’.
