26 The Buttermarket Ipswich is a Grade II Listed building dating back to the late 16th Century and more recently accommodated serviced offices. Planning consent was obtained for a new workshop, a large single bed flat at first floor level and a two bedroom maisonette above accommodated within a new roof. Originally of timber frame construction the building was latterly faced with brickwork and includes a number of Regency features including applied wall panelling that was later restored. The project posed a variety of challenges in negotiating different levels and separate freeholds whilst maintaining spatial and technical standards. Lack of maintenance and piecemeal modifications meant that the fabric was in poor condition and structurally unsound on the upper levels and the building was effectively stitched back together.
