East Bergholt, Suffolk
Role:†Planning, Design & Project Management
Scope:†Retro Fit, Sustainable Design
Client: Mr & Mrs Rafinski
The property, a late 1960ís weather boarded house, was of little character or quality. OWL Architectís brief was two-fold: to improve the appearance of the house given its prominent corner location close to Flatford Mill (an AONB) in East Bergholt, Suffolk; and to improve its energy performance and address a number of shortcomings and building defects. The completed project achieves its sustainable design aims and in addition provides new accommodation at first floor level. Fabric performance was enhanced by sheathing the house with insulation prior to over cladding the whole. All windows were replaced in timber with triple glazed Eco-plus units and the heating system replaced with provision for the future installation of solar collectors.
