Harleston House is a large Victorian property located within a Conservation Area in Lowestoft, Suffolk and has a chequered history as a school and army headquarters prior to becoming a care home. OWL Architects assisted the client in the purchase of the property and were charged with a brief to modernise the home; effectively doubling its capacity and incorporating a dedicated dementia unit. The works were phased to initially add a three storey extension accommodating 20 new ensuite bedrooms, a new kitchen, lounge, staffroom and administrative facilities. Once complete the existing residents were moved into the new wing to enable the refurbishment and alteration of the existing building. The completed project was opened by television and radio presenter Helen McDermott in 2010.
