House at Oulton Broad
Role: Planning, Design & Project Management
Scope: New Build, Conservation Area
A large detached new build, family house with an aspect onto the Broads at Oulton near Lowestoft in Suffolk. The styling of the house was a key component of the brief and reproduces an Arts and Crafts appearance. Whilst the detailing is traditional the plan form is contemporary with a large central living area surrounded by a series of cellular spaces contained within single storey wings that extend north and south. Planning consent was obtained by OWL Architects on the basis of design merit given a history of refusals and policy that would otherwise discourage redevelopment in a Conservation Area. Heat energy is provided by a gas-fired condensing boiler combined with a whole house ventilation system and heat recovery unit.
