Sharnbrook is a Grade II Listed Queen Anne house of red brick with stone dressings located in Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire. It is set in landscaped grounds and is enclosed by a later wall and link which together with a more recent extension detract from the house’s character and visual quality. OWL Architects were commissioned to look into the viability of extension proposals for residential care use. Our approach was based on a combination of restoration, removal of later additions and the construction of two contemporary pavilions that reinstated axial formality to the rear of the house. In addition we proposed removal of the wall along the frontage effectively opening the main façade to the street. The LPA were initially unreceptive but subsequent negotiation with councillors and planning officers generated support for the scheme.
