The Sir Christopher Cockerell Centre
Role: Planning, Design & Project Management
Scope: New Build, Sustainable Design
Client: Lowestoft College
Value: £6.5 million
The SCCC is a new build faculty of technology for Lowestoft College and accommodates a number of vocational workshops, classrooms, social and administrative facilities in a stand alone building of some 4400m≤.†Largely passive ventilation systems (no-air conditioning) and natural lighting combined with high levels of fabric insulation contribute to a sustainable design with efficient energy use. Materials from the demolition works were utilised in the construction and solar heating, rainwater harvesting and sedum roofing were some of the wider initiatives employed. A system building approach was combined with a strong architectural vision to deliver a transformational building to tight time constraints that is both distinctive and values its users. OWL Architects acted as lead-designer and project manager and planning consent was secured without issue.
